Women of the Mountains – Women’s Mountains

The latter are few in number compared to mountains with men's names – for the 100 years of "exploratory mountaineering" up to 1930, women were excluded from this male-dominated "sport" because they were not considered "ladylike" and this did not fit the traditional role of women as housewives and mothers. And yet, it was women who made first ascents and gave their names to routes and peaks. Some of them fought for women's rights, like Elizabeth Main or Fanny Bullock Workman. This exhibition is dedicated to these outstanding female mountaineers and "their" mountains around the world.
